Adhesion Testing

Doing an adhesion test is an important part of the preparation process prior to starting painting. It is suggested that the test is completed so as to make sure that it is ok to apply fresh coatings to the current surface. By doing this test you can ensure that when you apply the new paint you are giving it the best possible chance of adhering.

The easiest way to do the adhesion test is to cut through the surface to be painted in a crosshatch pattern then apply some masking tape over the area and pull off.  If the paint comes away with the tape then you know that the surface isn’t sound for painting and additional preparation may be required prior to painting.

Aussie Painters Network recommend that this test be completed before you start painting.

Testing for Lead Based Paint at the same time is recommended.
